What if the most beautiful sea with legendary coral reefs was right on your doorstep, but you never had the opportunity to experience it? What if your family goes fishing every day, but neither your parents nor you can swim? Would you protect what you only know, at best, from the cooking pot?
These are the decisive questions for our joint project with the Marine Megafauna Foundation (MMF) in Mozambique. The school programme, using VR headsets and virtual diving off the coast of Mozambique, introduces children and adults to the beauty of the underwater world on their doorstep. Combined with lessons on ocean conservation, the approach is almost complete. Only one thing is missing, and the MMF staff are addressing this too: swimming lessons. This serves not only the safety of the children, but also allows them to become acquainted with the largest habitat on Earth – the ocean. It is of fundamental importance that the next generation learns to love what needs to be protected; this is how future marine conservationists grow.
We believe this is a sound investment in the future, and for this very reason, we have been supporting the MMF in this highly important task in Mozambique for several years, and will continue to do so in the future.
