On 24 July 2025, our planet's ecological resources for this year will be mathematically depleted. From this point onwards, from an ecological perspective, we will be living for the remainder of the year at the expense of future generations. Germany reached this threshold as early as 3 May. If everyone worldwide lived as people do in Germany, three Earths would be required to sustain our resource consumption in the long term.
A retrospective view illustrates how significantly this trend has shifted: in 1970, Earth Overshoot Day fell on 29 December – marking the last time global resource consumption was virtually in equilibrium with what the Earth can regenerate within a single year. Since then, this date has consistently moved earlier into the year.
"There is no Planet B" – a concept that warrants collective reflection.
