As of 24 July 2025, Earth's regenerative resources for this year have been mathematically exhausted. From this point forward, in ecological terms, humanity will operate on a resource deficit for the remainder of the year at the expense of future generations. Germany reached this threshold earlier, on 3 May. If global consumption patterns aligned with those of Germany, three planet Earths would be required to sustain this level of resource consumption long-term.
A retrospective analysis illustrates the trajectory of this trend: in 1970, Earth Overshoot Day occurred on 29 December, marking the last instance where global resource consumption was approximately aligned with the annual regenerative capacity of the Earth. Since then, this threshold has occurred progressively earlier each year.
