To put it in a nutshell: a superb location, a wonderful team = a great deal of new and important information alongside adventures for the children!
The WDR issued the call "Türen auf mit der Maus" (Open Doors with the Mouse), and ElasmOcean was one of more than 750 hosts to open its doors. Unsurprisingly, given the educational focus: we were visited by several young "experts". While microplastics in the ocean and ghost nets astonished the children, the question of whether orcas hunt Great White Sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) received highly precise answers. Yes, even the "king of sharks" has predators. The Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis), the platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus), and even Sharky from the Kölner Haie were also identified playfully in no time. Distinguishing whether a sirenian was a dugong (Dugong dugon) or a manatee (family Trichechidae) proved, quite literally, to be child's play. Haidemarie, our female shark model in the pool at the Sharky Schwimmschule in Cologne-Lövenich, delighted in the starfish, and diving with her was a completely new, wonderful, and exciting experience for the children!
