Tuna are remarkable inhabitants of our oceans. Reaching speeds of up to 75 km/h, they are among the fastest fish in the world and play an essential role in marine ecosystems. However, their survival is severely threatened: species such as the Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) have already lost more than 50% of their populations, and the yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares), with an annual harvest of approximately 1.3 million tonnes, is also under immense pressure.

The drivers of this drastic decline are multifaceted. Overfishing represents one of the primary threats, as high demand for sushi and canned products exploits stocks beyond sustainable limits. Furthermore, fish aggregating devices (FADs) not only attract tuna but also numerous other marine organisms, including sharks, sea turtles, and juvenile fish, which frequently perish as bycatch. Climate change further exacerbates the situation by warming the oceans, disrupting tuna migratory routes, and altering spawning grounds.

Nonetheless, there are positive developments. Catch quotas, such as limiting the yellowfin tuna harvest to 110,000 tonnes per year, alongside seasonal closures where specific areas remain free of fishing for 45 days a year, represent critical measures for stock conservation.

Individual action also contributes to these conservation efforts. Reducing fish consumption, exploring plant-based alternatives, or supporting organisations dedicated to ocean conservation helps preserve this remarkable fish species. Tuna are indispensable to marine ecosystems; collective action can secure their future.
