Humanity possesses greater knowledge of the far side of the Moon than of Earth's oceans. Over two-thirds of the planet is covered by water. Given this scale, the paucity of our knowledge is striking. This must change: research must be conducted effectively and efficiently. Rigorously selected and systematically supported research can yield highly significant results. Only profound research findings can support profound decisions.
Yet even where extensive knowledge of the oceans exists, it remains insufficient. This is demonstrated by how most of humanity treats the marine environment, despite awareness of the damage caused: pollution, microplastics, overfishing, shark finning – in many areas, current knowledge is adequate, yet the necessary behavioural changes fail to materialise. This also applies to the climate crisis, the marine impacts of which extend far beyond rising sea levels.
Evidently, much of the scientific consensus fails to reach the general public. The technical language of researchers is often too complex to achieve broad engagement. This is where we intervene: ElasmOcean translates science.
Our mission is the objective communication of rigorous science to build a bridge to those whose behaviour must change: decision-makers in governments and corporations, funders, investors, and consumers. If all these groups act upon current knowledge, humanity will preserve the only planet it inhabits. The desire exists among all ethically minded individuals – yet the correct implementation through sustainable behaviour is lacking, due to a lack of awareness.
Humans live on land and overlook the sea – a critical oversight at the expense of future generations. All life originates from the oceans.
