Our oceans are suffocating in plastic, largely invisible to the majority of people. Humanity continues to produce and consume plastics unabated, and disposes of them – partly unconsciously, partly with deliberate intent – into the oceans. Out of sight, out of mind, is the general attitude – but ElasmOcean is changing this: we are making marine plastic visible inland. We have collected plastic debris from oceans and beaches worldwide and compiled them into an extensive plastic collection. Some items, such as a diving fin dating back to 1949, had been drifting in the oceans for over 70 years before being found and retrieved by ElasmOcean members. The fin is now on display in the shop window of "Fette Beute-Unverpackt" in Brühl, near Cologne, alongside numerous other plastic items from both Germany and around the globe.
It is a display designed to prompt reflection, critical thought, and perhaps even a moment of sudden realization. Curious? Then feel free to visit the exhibition in Brühl.
During a presentation at the "Fette Beute-Unverpackt" shop on 17 September at 18:30, ElasmOcean will provide information on the ecological issues caused by marine plastic, as well as solutions to avoid plastic use and reduce environmental impact.
